Project Brief
An adjacent strip of land was to be joined with the existing plot to form one garden space. This new area could not have any permanent hard surfaces.
The clients wanted a garden with more atmosphere. that you don’t see all at once, whilst developing views from the house. To create more dynamic spaces, and to maintain the secluded feel. Several places to sit in the garden, with the main area outside the kitchen. A garden that works for three children (And their friends!), with wooden climbing frame, and space to kick a football. A secure space.

Interpretation
Using a simple curved pergola structure, the two previously separate areas were connected into one space. This also immediately created a division in the space and mystery of what lay beyond. The structure creates depth whilst supporting interesting climbing plants.
Structures are repeated on the side of the house, to create definition, and framing a view from the kitchen window to one of several focal points.
The garden has a dynamic shape, whilst allowing plenty of space for kids play and ball games.
As permanent hard landscape areas were not to be used in the new strip rounds of a mature Oak were used to create an alternative seating area.
