Project
Brief
To create a garden that connects with the architecture and materials of the
house, and Hampstead Heath (On the Eastern Boundary).
A space that reflects the clients South African roots and love of planting.
A soft garden using timber and planting.
Interpretation
The design balances the clients wish for plenty of lawn space and love of foliage,
using a raised curved walkway through the borders around the garden. The
lawn and new seating area occupy the sunniest parts of the garden, so the
majority of planting is shade tolerant, and many suitable foliage plants
could be used.
Underplanting with groundcover and
bulbs has ensured a succession of interest throughout the
year. Ferns, grasses and bold foliage plants are positioned
to be distinct from one another, yet appear complimentary.
The scheme has achieved cohesion between
house and garden, an important factor as the garden wraps
around the house on three sides. There are connections
and parallels between shapes, materials and structures.
This is a fabulous and striking
garden, complex and difficult to realise, yet that completely
fulfils the brief. The clients are delighted. It works
as a family garden, whilst creating drama, magic and
interest.
