Scope
A new town, south facing back garden.
Brief
The clients had bought a strip of land across the back of the garden and wanted a redesign. This was to include a deep koi pond, lawn, storage, BBQ, seating area for 6 to 8 people with a fire, hot tub, and a garden with a strong connection to the house. Ways to improve privacy from neighbouring buildings. The clients wanted a garden that fused modern garden elements and textural planting with the property, to be outward looking, despite there being no borrowed landscape to draw on.
Design Interpretation
There were many elements to this project, in a space that at first seemed too small.
The Koi pond filtration alone took up a considerable amount of space. Two walls were positioned, one to screen the pond equipment, and one to allow a built in gas fireplace with storage behind.
A simple steel pergola was designed to sit over a new hot tub, to improve privacy and allow hanging lights over the frame.
Connecting these areas is a Millboard walkway across the width of the garden which increases visual width, and stone paths to accentuate length.
To be outward looking, yet not overlooked, required careful tree positioning; Cherry, Acer, and Arbutus trees create shelter and shade, and help frame the various structures. A series of vertical steel posts accentuates the shape of the one curved bed.
A swing seat offers an escape and focal point.
